My name is Maris Degener. I’m a certified yoga teacher specializing in Vinyasa Flow- a rigorous, dynamic style of yoga focusing on linking breath with movement for a beautiful, dancelike practice.
Based out of the East Bay Area of California, I’ve been teaching since I became certified at age 16 at Just Be Yoga, Walnut Creek. I came to yoga as a method of healing my body, spirit, and soul from an eating disorder that took over my life when I was a young teenager. Today, I use my story to connect with others and spread awareness of the realities of mental illness; and, most importantly, that healing is truly possible.
I’m committed to giving back and practicing the yogic principle of Seva, or selfless service. I’m grateful to be an advisor for the Phoenix Project, a digital platform that delivers immediate trauma-informed healing resources to survivors of sexual assault.
I’m eager to connect with you, and I’m glad you’re here.
Love and light,
Who are you?
Long story short: a yogi, activist, writer, artist, and recovering perfectionist. I spend my time creating things, reading, practicing yoga, and enjoying the outdoors. I’m also a college student. But I forget to say that part a lot.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Vegas (so if you needed proof that what happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas, you’re lookin’ at her, baby), but have lived most of my life in California. Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, I now spend most of my time hanging around a little further south in Santa Cruz.
WHAT’S THIS FILM THING ABOUT?
I’m the subject of a documentary about yoga, eating disorders, and healing, titled “I Am Maris” by Laura VanZee Taylor and ro*co films. Learn more about the film at iammarismovie.com.
WHAT DO YOU WRITE ABOUT?
Yoga, mental health, and the mistakes I’ve made along the journey of this lifetime. Hopefully me learning the hard way can help you either avoid the mistakes I’ve made, or help you find the silver linings in the ones you will make.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN practicing YOGA?
I started practicing when I was 14, and began my teacher training at 15.
WHAT KIND OF YOGA DO YOU TEACH?
My training was predominantly Vinyasa Flow based, although I draw inspiration from Ashtanga and teach Yin, Gentle Flow, and other styles of classes.
WHERE DO YOU TEACH?
DO YOU DO ANYTHING OTHER THAN YOGA FOR EXERCISE?
I love hiking, weightlifting, paddle boarding, and pretty much anything else that gets my body moving. I used to swim competitively, but that’s a past life.
HOW CAN I WORK WITH YOU?
I offer group classes, private classes, one-on-one mentoring, workshops, speaking engagements, social media marketing consulting, and more. Get all the deets here, or drop me an email at email@example.com. I look forward to connecting with you!
